I am a Consultant Paediatric Clinical Neuropsychologist and Chartered Clinical Psychologist in independent practice. I hold private clinics for both clinical referrals and medico-legal reporting. I have over twenty-five years’ experience in the field of Clinical Psychology and Paediatric Neuropsychology and I have authored multiple publications. I worked as a NHS Consultant and the Lead Clinician for Paediatric Neuropsychology at Leeds Children's Hospital, The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust from 2004 to May 2022. During this time, I also held positions as the Head of the Department of Paediatric Psychology and Joint Clinical Lead for Trust wide Neuropsychology services.
I hold the degree of Bachelor of Science (Hons.) 2:1 and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology awarded by the University of Leeds. I have completed courtroom and cross examination skills and report writing courses. I am registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) as a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and have completed post-doctoral training to ensure I hold practitioner full-membership of the Division of Neuropsychology of the British Psychological Society. I am a Member of the BPS's Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists (Registration Number: 2364319755), the Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors and am an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. I am an Associate Editor for the journal Neuropsychological Rehabilitation. I was a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Leeds, Faculty of Medicine and Health and am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
Following qualification as a Clinical Psychologist, I first worked as part of a busy multidisciplinary Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service team for four years. In addition, I have worked at Oxford’s Department of Neuropsychology. This permitted experience of assessing and treating children and young people with complex neurodevelopmental difficulties (e.g. ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder), intellectual disability, educational difficulties, mental health difficulties, epilepsies and acquired brain injuries.
I regard sub-specialisation with large case volumes and being research active as key to my clinical practice and expertise. I specialise in the assessment and treatment of children and young people with acquired brain injuries (e.g. traumatic brain injury, brain tumours, encephalitis, meningitis and stroke) and epilepsies, including epilepsy surgery candidates. Assessment involves understanding the cognitive, psychological, educational and social impact of injury and neurological impairment. I see brain injured children and young people routinely for out-patient neuropsychological assessments to determine the effects of injury on cognitive functioning, (e.g. memory and attention), learning, behaviour and provide rehabilitation. Liaison with schools and Local Education Authorities is extensive. I also see patients to assess and treat the psychological effects of injury or illness. For example, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression or adjustment difficulties that can result from traumatic experiences or injury.
I provide lectures and presentations for the NHS, conferences, Universities and the private sector. I offer supervision and examine Clinical Psychologists completing the British Psychological Society’s Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology - Paediatric route. I have been the Chief Investigator for a national research study (https://doi.org/10.1007/s00381-018-4015-3). My clinical and research interests include: childhood traumatic brain injury, brain tumours, paediatric epilepsy surgery, effort testing, neuropsychological rehabilitation and the psychological treatment of children with acquired brain injuries.
